What is an accredited investor?
First, we will explain what we mean by an “accredited investor”. The Wall Street Journal recently published an article, “How to Better Target Investors.” In that article, the author states, “The term is loosely defined as an individual who has sufficient income and assets to reasonably expect to make a substantial investment and will be able to bear the economic risk of such investment over time.”
This category of investor is typically responsible for at least $250,000 in assets and/or salary or income above the median household income depending on the area. While you cannot pull money from a 401k or IRA with this criteria, you are allowed to withdraw funds from a taxable account but must pay applicable taxes and penalties.
What is a real estate investor?
Real estate investors invest in real estate, usually to either build a portfolio of income-producing properties or to portfolio them for long-term capital appreciation.
There are no maximums for real estate investments. You can invest as much money as you want into your real estate investment portfolio, providing that you are working with an accredited investor.
